On 26 April 2022, the Spanish Ambassador to the USA Santiago Cabanas hosted a meeting of Washington DC-based Ambassadors and senior diplomats of the ICDP Support Group and the EU Ambassador with an ICDP delegation led by ICDP Vice President Ruth Dreifuss and ICDP Commissioner Governor Martin O'Malley and the ICDP Secretariat comprising Executive Director Asunta Vivó and Director of Policy Rajiv Narayan. President Navi Pillay participated in the meeting remotely due to travel restrictions. The meeting focused on the current situation of the death penalty in the USA and the interventions by the diplomats and ICDP Commissioners provided for a very productive exchange of ideas on the current state of play with recommendations for future steps on the issue. The ICDP delegation - Vice President Ruth Dreifuss, Commissioner Governor O'Malley and the ICDP Secretariat - had illuminating discussions on the current situation of the death penalty in the USA and identifying possible actions with prominent Washington DC-based civil society organizations and Representative James McGovern, the Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in the US Congress.
