The International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP) warmly welcomes Côte D’Ivoire´s accession, on 3 May 2024, to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Second Optional Protocol), aiming at the abolition of the death penalty. This significant milestone follows the favorable votes of the bill by the country's National Assembly and the Senate, on 6 June 2023, which authorize the ratification.
Côte d'Ivoire has not carried out executions since its independence in August 1960 and death penalty was abolished for all crimes in Art. 2 of its Constitution in 2000. By adopting this international commitment, the country has now become the 91st State Party to the Second Optional Protocol.
