The International Network of Academics for the Abolition of Capital Punishment has organized a conference on 11 June to prepare for the 5th World Congress against the Death Penalty, Madrid 12-15 June 2013.
The one day preparatory conference in Madrid brought together academics, activists and politicians to discuss a range of death penalty issues including a moratorium on executions, deterrent effect of the death penalty, new approaches to the right to life and human cruelty in art.
The International Commission against the Death Penalty participated to this preparatory conference. ICDP President Federico Mayor spoke in the opening session, Mr. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, honorary member of ICDP, chaired the roundtable “The death sentence as cruel and inhuman punishment: cruelty in international jurisprudence and national Courts”.
