On 25 March 2026, ICDP Co-Executive Directors Asunta Vivó Cavaller and Rajiv Narayan participated online in a hybrid parliamentary workshop on the death penalty organised by Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) on the sidelines of its 46th Annual Forum in Mexico City.
The workshop brought together parliamentarians from Jamaica, Nigeria, the Gambia, Pakistan and the Netherlands to discuss concrete strategies to advance the abolition of capital punishment at the national and regional levels. ICDP's Co-Executive Directors addressed participants on the current global situation, warning that while progress toward abolition is real, it is not irreversible, and that sustained political commitment remains essential. They highlighted alarming setbacks, including record execution figures in several retentionist states and recent moves to expand the death penalty in Israel and the Maldives, and encouraged parliamentarians to collaborate across party lines to reform legislation, establish moratoria and fulfil their oversight roles on human rights obligations.
ICDP is happy to hear reports that the workshop resulted in concrete commitments from participating parliamentarians, including pledges by parliamentarians from Jamacia and Gambia to work in their respective parliaments toward moving their countries towards ending the death penalty.
