The International Commission against the Death Penalty (ICDP or Commission) deeply regrets the reported execution, carried out by Japanese authorities, of 34-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi on Friday, 27 June 2025.
Takahiro Shiraishi was sentenced to death in December 2020 after pleading guilty to the killing of nine people. Although his legal team initially argued that victims had consented to their deaths in an effort to obtain a reduced sentence, Mr Shiraishi later contradicted this defence by testifying that his first victim had not consented. Moreover, in January 2021, he withdrew his lawyer’s appeal to the Tokyo High Court and expressed his desire to be executed quickly.
