Soon after the announcement of the commutations of the death sentences of two Salvadoran prisoners in December 2010 (read the statement by the ICDP in this regard), the Supreme Court of Cuba has now also lifted the death sentence of the last remaining prisoner on death row – the Cuban-American Humberto Eladio Real.
In Cuba exists a de facto moratorium since 2003. On the occasion of the votes with regard to the three UNGA resolutions on a moratorium on the use of the death penalty in 2007, 2008 and 2010 Cuba always abstained.
In a letter to the President of the Council of State of Cuba Raul Castro, the ICDP welcomes the release of the remaining death row prisoner.
