The African Commission on Human and Peoples´ Rights held its 49th Ordinary Session between the 28 of April and the 12 of May in Banjul, Gambia. For information on the Session and the Final Communiqué, please visit their website at: www.achpr.org.
One of the items of the agenda was the presentation of the activities report of the Chairperson of the Working Group of the Death Penalty Mrs. Zainabou Sylvie Kayitesi including presentation of her report on the Study on the Question of the Death Penalty in Africa. The Secretary-General of the International Commission against the Death Penalty Asunta Vivó Cavaller attended this specific session.
Mrs Vivo Cavaller took the opportunity to meet with the Commissioner Zainabou Sylvie Kayitesi, Chairperson of the Working Group on the Death Penalty, to discuss ways of future cooperation of the two organizations on the issue of the abolition of the death penalty in Africa.

On the 4 of May, the International Federation of Action by Christians for the Abolition of Torture (FIACAT), Foundation For Human Rights Initiative (FHRI), Penal Reform International (PRI) and the World Coalition against the Death Penalty (WCADP) organized a side event on the “Progressive abolition of the death penalty in Africa”. Commissioner Zainabou Sylvie Kayitesi participated along Mrs. Vivo Cavaller who represented the ICDP. See attached the oral statement issued during the side event by the organizers of the side event.
