On 5th July 2012 Benin acceded to the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, aiming at the abolition of the death penalty.
Benin becomes the 75th state party to this treaty.
Benin’s abolition of the death penalty should encourage other African states observing a moratorium on executions to take the next step and abolish capital punishment in law.
